Questions on Restoration

Everyone, As I continue to wait for the hull to be completed a series of questions have arisen that I need help with. Here is my list. 1.) The welder and I have noticed that there appears to be a reinforcing panel that was tacked on to the outside of the body in several places. They include: a) At t...

Re: Deck Pan Head Screws

Everyone,

They are not Pan head screws, they are Binding head screws that are different and a bit harder to find.

Re: Anyone know of a restored GPA for sale?

David, I have seen the trailer and I agree that it is a poor mock-up of a GPA or GAZ. I do not know whether they (the movie guys) were trying to make it as a GPA or GAZ. All I know is that they used a GPA hull to create the "movie vehicles." I do not think the actual GPA was used in the mo...

Re: Anyone know of a restored GPA for sale?

David,

You better be hooked up to a recusitator if and when you do find someone willing to sell theirs. Too much blood, sweat and tears in the effort to let one go easily!! I would sure like to know what the current value is and will be when the new IJ4 movie comes out.

Re: Hullticknes

Patrick, It varies from section to section. The front part is thicker than the side and the bottom of the hull I believe is the thickest part. Some parts of the bottom (especially where the spring hangers bolt through) are reinforced with an extra thickness of sheet metal. I think that the most comm...

Jan/Richard, Thank you for the advice. I still have not decided but I like your idea. I have been told that the nylon will weaken with time. I too have thought how difficult it would be to line up the castle nut notches with the bolt hole. My gut tells me to go with the nylon in that it does give yo...

Spring Hanger Bolts?

Everyone, In my desire to replace critical components I am trying to figure out what to do about the spring bracket bolts. My GPA came with two different lengths with the end drilled for castle nuts. I have tried to replace with Grade 8 bolts but the hole for the cotter pin is causing a problem. I j...

Dominque,

Very nice. It looks like you did a lot of hard work to bring it back looking so well.

I like the post-war electric bilge pump...something I will probably put in in multiple places!!!

Good swimming,

Everyone, I have not gotten to this stage yet but my original hull seal was made out of leather. I contemplated having the seal remade out of leather but decided against it as it was not made to endure for a long period. I feel uneasy not clamping but understand the reasoning behind it. My thoughts ...

Ian, Thanks for the info. I have not visted the Benson Museum but did ask for copies of some specific parts that I was missing which I have since had reproduced from the drawings. The only parts I believe I am missing are the rear tire mount bracket (the one that attaches to the deck) and the suppor...

Ian, When you say that you have full size drawings, is it of the hull (with dimensions) or are you saying it is a type of 3-D rendering of the GPA. I was told that actual hull drawings do not exist. As I am repairing the hull of mine right now I have come to realize that the hull is made of a bunch ...

Peter,

Thanks. That is what I suspected. Initially, my welder took the ribbing size from somwehere else on the vehicle and then noticed that the ribs are not all the same size. Slowly but surely!

Thanks again,

Donovan.

Ribbing Width

Everyone, As I repair the left and right rear side panels, I have noticed that the ribbing on the GPA at the bottom is slightly thicker for the bottom rib as opposed to the upper ribs in the middle section. My bottom ribs are missing in the rear panels and I am trying to assess whether the bottom ri...

Richard, The problem is that if you have a hull in restorable condition, you probably have most of the vehicle. If you were able to find just the hull, then finding all of the associated parts to make it work would cost a small fortune. Yes, the engine, transmission, and transfercase are the same as...
