GPA Engine Stamps

Hello,

I am going to restamp my engine block to match my GPA serial number GPA 2196. Obviously I am not trying to be covert about it and will gladly tell all this is what occured, however I would like to have the "correct" number there on the block.

Does anybody have a set of stamps I could borrow I believe they are 3/8 inch? I need G P A 2 1 9 6 and the thing between the A and 2. I believe the 9 and 6 are the same stamp just turned upside down and probably a reversed P would work, and the 1 is a capital I. Richard Grace was going to lend me his number stamps but he can't find them at the moment and this is holding my GPA assembly up in the engine compartment since the engine is already installed.

I would gladly pay any kind of deposit required for this and can provide references as to my character from many well known G504ers.... please help me out if you can. You can see my GPA progress in the amphibious section if you'd like. The stamps would be going to Oklahoma for the stamping and then sent right back.

Hello Tony,

I have the same problem, but not on my engine but on the frame.
My gpa framenumber is very faint, and I like to fresh it up with original stamps.
I asked this 2 years ago on the G503 and other boards, but never had any reply.
But I keep looking for them, if I do find a good set of stamps I'll let you know.
(The height is 3/8" on the frame as well).

Tony,

The chances of finding metal stamps that are the same font as the original stamps will probably be very remote. I did pick up a set of metal stamps at Harbor Freight (I believe they were 1/4" but I think HF has bigger sizes) and these may work for you.

Hi Leo,
Regarding you frame stamping being faint.
I had the same problem on the GP iI recently restored. If I repainted the frame the original number would have been gone.

So I borrowed a small air engraving tool from my work and a tiny milling tool. This tool was the same width as the original stamping.

By carefully tracing the old numbers I was able to get it back like new.

At least this is the solution to your problem.

Regarding stamps. There is a company here that makes them. but one offs would be costly.

Yes I understand the font will be hard to find... but I've seen some that are close... I believe the hardest one to find is the 6 and nine which don't have a curve... I believe Richard made one by grinding his 8 down and using a chisel blade for the line.... thus having to stamp the cirlcle and line separately.... pretty tricky. The other thing I see is that most of the modern stamps "I" does not have the top and bottom lines... which as you probably know is what the number 1 is... 2I96... I've also thought that if I found a reverse set with a P that may work for the 9 and 6... the reverse sets are used to make molds.. so that when something is poured in the mold the stamp comes out the right way.

For the stamps I will need a G P and A and the 7 and 8, but if I can't find them I will try Richard's advice.

I think I found the engine stamps... in the correct Ford Post 1938 font.... They aren't cheap is there any interest from anyone else to help defray the cost...

Great Gerben I am thinking about getting the letters "G" "P" "A" and "W" and all of the numbers this way we could lend it to GPW folks as well. I should know the cost by wed/thurs so I'll let you know ahead of time. How are your vehicles coming along? Did you ever sell your DUKW?
