GPA discovery

Post by bobassel »

Hi GPA friends,
In 2002 I was able to go to South Africa, and buy there GPA 4928.
One of the eight GPA's that went to South Africa in 1943.
All frame / chassis numbers are known to me, thanks to the South African Historical Military Museum.
Also the correct South African registration numbers that were painted on the hulls.
The most rare and unique GPA in the world is in this museum, the almost untouched GPA 4926.
This GPA with 184 ml on trip and totall mile counter is the example for originality!

So; GPA 4926 in the museum, I bought 4928 in 2002, one in the hands of an S.A. collector 4838.
And when I was over there, Eugen Nick (from who I bought this GPA) told me that the collector had also
a "demolition" GPA; 4852.( U-47596 )
The remaining other four GPA's are unknown up to now.
When I was in Amsterdam, during the international Amphib event 2024, it came to my ears that an GPA was comming
to europe from South Africa.
All my attention was there because I was very curious what GPA this was !
One unknown or that "demolition"GPA ?
Polish guys bought this GPA together with all other military vehicles and parts.
Very early in the morning I left home to see this GPA that was going to poland.
And..... it was the GPA 4852 from that collector.
It was as expected not in perfect condition, but all rare parts where there, incl. the matching engine!
The original South African registration number was still visable on the hull, so that proved it was GPA 4852.

All parts were with it; surfshield, complete engine, capstan, and drive, dog clutch, complete dash with plates, head lamp brackets, rear tail light brackets, water propellor and shafts, rudder ,etc etc.....
My mate Wibo and I were able to buy it from the Polish guys, and now it is for sale in the Netherlands.

Lets hope that this unique GPA finds its way to a good restoration.
