GPA Windshield Bumper Material

Gentlemen,

What is the material mounted on the windshield Bumper that supports the windshield in the down position? I always thought it was welting secured with screws but after speaking with Dave at WeeBee webbing and us both looking at Bob's picture of the untouched GPA it looks almost like rubber the way the sides are eroded down...

1) What was it originally?
2) What are people using for this material?

Thanks,
Tony

Hello Tony & others

The original material is a canvas mixed rubber.
I have exactly the same on my GPA and according
to Eugen Nick these were to the originals.
They are fastened with bolts & nuts with hollow countersunk washers.

Bob,

Thanks for the reply. In your picture it looks like the material is scured by screws similar to the top seat cushions (Driver/Passenger) with the grommets. Am I misinterpreting the picture?

Also any idea on where to find this material today? Or a close equivalent?

Thanks,
Tony

Tony,
I was missing it at one side and found a piece at Jaap Rietveld
I was about 1/2 a inch thick , I hammered it a little flat screws [indead it is the same way as the seats only no parkerscrew] in it and ready.

Outside is canvas inside is like a mix canvas with ?

Bracket from another angle!
It is for certain canvas with rubber mixture.
And as you can see now bolts & nuts and those washers as mentioned above!

Everyone,

I choose to differ on this as far as a late model is concerned. I took mine apart and it appeared to be folded over welting. When I tried to duplicate it it looked very similar except for the 60 years of aging and previous use. I believe I kept the old ones and would be glad to try and post a picture when I get a chance (I am not at home right now).

The screws were oval head screws with countersuck washers that matches what the parts manual says should be used for these stops and it makes sense after putting them back together. Again I will try and post pictures when I get home. I really do not think that is rubber and canvas but after 60+ years of aging, I could be wrong.

Donovan,

So your fastners are screws similar to the ones that hold the top seat cushion to the seat frame on the driver/passenger side? With the same washers/grommets? So below the windshield rest there were screw tips rather than nuts? Also is this cushioning material the same as hood welting on a GPW?

Tony,

The tops were similar as what holds the seats but they were not sheet metal screws. They were oval head machine screws with nuts on the bottom as shown in the above photos. I hope this helps.
