Parking Brake

Hello Guys,
Had a bit of a problem with the parking brake... I have the correct cable, NOS out of the big square box, and a GPW F marked handle... but when its all attached the handle has to come almost out all the way over a foot... it looks like there is only one way to attach since the outer sheath on the cable clamps onto the mount... and the bottom has a clevis and pin to go on to the actual brake. It almost seems like the outer sheath needs to be longer so the handle will not need to come out so far. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Tony

Yes Glen,
Same problem. I think we will be putting a spacer up inside the handle to take the slack up so the bottom of the handle to the start of the outer sheath is much shorter. Here are the parts that are called out under the Hand Brake group in the manual. Perhaps there is a special handle or spacer... its hard to tell from the list below.... Thoughts?

Hi Tony,
my thoughts are that the solution to the problem is somewhere in the fixation of the outer cable.
I think that there must be a bracket of some kind that is attached to the transfercase which holds the outer cable. But i haven't been able to find any evidence of this ....
With my original GPA-cable it wasn't possible to use the standard hole in the transfercase.
So i ended up fixing a new innner and outer jeep handbrakecable to my F-marked handle ... now it works perfectly
Beste regards,
Glenn

Glenn,
So you just went with a GPW brake cable?

Yes Tony,
i took the cable of a MB (replica), cut off the handle at the balljoint, made a cut with a handsaw at the end, pried it open with a screwdriver, took out the old and inserted the new cable, welded the handle, et voila .... nobody can tell the difference ......
Excepted the people who read this post off course !

Hi Tony,
I think this was an age old problem with the GPW as well.
The Australian army got round the problem on them by putting a bracket with a whole heap of holes drilled in to it that spaced the cable away from the fire wall.
I must admit I like the solution of putting a spacer inside the hand brake tube. Much neater.
On my original GPA I used a GPW hand brake cable, but it is a bit short and a real stretch to make ends meet.
Best regards
Richard
