Re: Sealing boots : how to place them

To save wear on the boot I did not use a clamp. I used two nylon "wire ties" aka "cable ties and cinched them down to where they are snug but not tight. I use wheel bearing grease and lube the drag link so that it slides in and out allowing the boot allowing the boot to remain in its ...

Re: GPA engine 10256

Tony is correct about it being used as a "tow"truck in a marina. Bubba had cut holes in the hull and added a tow bar so that he could move boats around. I remember that engine block having a severe crack (probably due to freezing) above the distributor. Bob, do you plan on trying to have t...

Re: Resistor Location ?

I don't have a picture handy, but on the left rear corner of the front deck, there are two screwsthat hold the resister in place. I can't remember exactly but t seems like there is a block insulator that attaches to the deck and the insulator fastens to the insulator block. My decking is in place so...

Re: differential vent hose connection

I think that virtually no dirt will get into this fitting. However, I recommend using this fitting to pressurize the axle (and the front as well). A standard brake fitting will screw into this and serve as your port to pressurize your axles. I bent the steel brake line in a U so that it would not co...

Re: GPA 5510 Progress

Apologies to the group. I lost my password and had difficulty getting back in. First of all GPA 5510 is 99.999% complete. Like a house, I don't know if they are ever 100% finished. About six months ago, my daughter Deborah told me that she wanted to leave her wedding in the GPA. That gave me a lot o...

Re: Seat-Tracks

Cees,

I have a set of GPA seat tracks. They are in excellent condition but do not have the rod that goes between them. Do you have any interesting GPA items to trade? Please send me a private message at srbarber@southernco.com

Re: drag link boot installation

I used an original seal and bolted it in the hull before I installed the drag link. I then made a similar tapered guide and taped it to the bow end of the drag link with electrical tape. I greased up the drag link and the tapered guide and pushed the drag link through the boot from the aft with a sl...

GPA 5510 Data Plates

Greetings, I have begun the restoration of the Cowl of GPA 5510. The data plates were replaced by the previous owner. There is one plate that seems odd to me. First of all, it is steel. Here is what it says: ENGINE COOLING FOR LAND & CALM WATER A OPEN FRONT DECK INTAKE B OPEN COWL SIDE OUTLETS C...

GPA 5510 Progress

Last night I routed the rudder cables on GPA 5510. I got all the cables attached to the rudder arm and tightened to where they were just about right. I was standing near the rear of the tub admiring how the cables looked as they left the spool going toward the first set of pulleys. At that point it ...

Re: GPA Mysterious Water

If you put the transmission in reverse with the bilge pump engaged, wouldn't this clear at least some of the water out of the pipes? I would think this standing water would also be an issue in cold climates. I would guess that this water could freeze and bust the pipes and or bildge pump. -Steve Ton...

GPA 5510 Progress

Here is an update on GPA 5510. This past weekend I borrowed a gantry crane and lowered the frame into my tub. This process went as smooth as silk and I would recommend it to others. Installing the engine/transmission assembly onto the frame makes access to the left front axle bump stop difficult to ...

Re: Radiator Drain

On a side note, Tony C came over to my house this weekend to among other things inspire me to complete GPA 5510. Tony noticed that the left propeller shaft support bracket on the inside of the propeller tunnel is welded around the edge whereas the right bracket is not welded around the edge. John's ...

Re: Sealing GPA Tub

On my tub I used POR15 to seal it. It is supposedly impervious to gasoline and other solvents when cured. The manufacturer also claims that the paint remains somewhat flexable. They have a thick version e that comes in a toothpaste type tube that I used for the seams. They also have a liquid that ca...
