Who can say when they changed from the first to the second model ?

What is the use of this bracket present on both panels ?

On top of the picture is the one I removed from GPA 7177 (Jan 1943).

Mithril,

from an engineering point of view it isn't so hard to explain ....

The first GPA's had the two turnlock's on eitherside of the engine-lid. Then someone must have complained about getting water trough this hatch.

The engineer got back behind his drawingboard and thought of a three-piece locking mechanism which was issued trough the MWO's.

That is also why the side panels have the old locking lip in place. They probably allready made several thousands of them and did not need to change this for the new locking system.

Just my thougt of things :wink:

BTW i'm searching for one of the late type locking mechanism (only the piece with the thread and wingnut) do you have one for sale ?

Hello Glenn & Mitril

The change must be made in any case after GPA 4928 because mine
still have the first model.
And like the other African GPA 4926 they have the tobe filter under the dash and no radio outletbox but the holes for this box where allready there!
The main wiring harnas is installed in the left chassis beam instead of the
later types in the tube alongside the hull.
These changes were made between GPA 4929 (mine) and Peter Verhoeven GPA 5755.

Hi guys,

the article from John Vitter, in the book 'Military and civillian Amphibians' states the following :

- relocated voltage regulator, to more adequately protect it from contact with salt water, date 12/17/42

- added inspection and servicing holes with covers, in front floor pan, to permit lubrication transmission and transfercase without having to remove entire floor, date 12/17/42

- redesigned engine cover hold down arangements, to improve sealing against entrance of water, date 12/17/42

There are more changes mentioned. As soon as i find the time i'll scan the document for those who don't own the book.

to continue your question ..... the covers in the frontfloor (which were neccesary for the lifting eyes in the first batch of GPA's) were also continued for no reason ...... :?

I agree with those modifications and I've got copies of all 12 field service
modification orders.
Modification w.o. W1 has the date;7 januari 1943 and W12 2 june 1943.
Fact is that mine GPA and the other untouched GPA 4926 both
d.o.d. 12-28-1942 don't have inspection holes for lubrication and first model engine lid wingnuts.
The voltage regulator is replaced to the higher new position and there were holes drilled extra in the Ford plant.
The original low place has the welded nuts but the new place has lose
nuts and locking rings.
The change of "castle" nuts (W1) from normal nuts was allso allready done at the Ford plant.
I prefer what I see on untouched vehicles and original pictures above
of reading new GPA books.

Hi Bob, Mithril,

there is nobody saying that on these days everything changed .... I can imagine that it all went gradually ... On my GPA (dod 14 january 1943) the inspectionholes for extra lubrication are cut with a blowtorch :shock:
They probably used-up all the old stock before the new batch with changed sheet-material would be ready from production. It probably took 1 or 2 months before all the changes were introduced (depending on the part).

Therefore, I agree with you Bob, that if you found it on your GPA in a certain way, it must be original, but the dates mentioned are a good guideline for knowing when the changes occured.
