Chassis Questions

Post by storchski »

Hey Guy's,

Is there any similarity between the chassis of the GPA and GPW? Why I ask is that my chassis is rusted out at the front arch area and I was wondering whether I could use a GPW chassis to repalce that section instead of repairing. I'll post some pics tomorrow. Any response is good.

Hi Nathan,
If I am correct the frame chassis of a GPW is not the same as the GPA .
The GPW is open at one side like a U and the GPA is made as two U formed metal inside each other.
I hope you understand what I mean. 1

Nathan,

I happen to have photos of both GPA and GPW frame front side.
I think the photos speak for them selves, there are many differences.

Hi Nathan,
Regarding your chassis rails. I know Rick Edwards has a spare chassis that needs some work. The side rails were in good condition on it.

Send me an Email if you need his contact details.

Best regards

Nathan, now that you bring up the differences in the frame of the GPW and GPA I thought of just how very few parts interchange between the two:

Engine head
Engine internal components but not the block or manifold
Carb
transmission
wheels
brake shoes
wheel cylinders

David,

Actually many parts interchange with the GPW, however there may be subtle differences in add-ons.

The Block is the same,
Manifold can be used if it has a vacuum port.
Front axle is the same except the knuckle and wheel bearing seals are different
Transfercase is the same except for the front housing.
Pintle hook
Light housings (except bulbs)
etc.

In actually, they tried to use as much as possible and then modified as neccessary. I am not saying you can turn a GPW into a GPA, but a lot more parts are common than what you would expect.

Well, from that prospective you could claim that some Willys parts interchange also but they would not be technically correct either.
